Hanoi Part II


The Vietnamese like songbirds. Supposedly McCain's POW nickname was Songbird because he gave the Vietnamese so much information.


But the birds aren't always happy -- some don't sing, and others neurotically flutter around their cage all day, like the restless blurry prisoner above. But I knew one who lived across the alley from me in Ho Chi Minh City that tweeted regularly and I think cheerfully.

Here's something else pretty: lotus flowers. The flowers, I learned yesterday, are used in a variety of remedies, treating everything from syphilis to smallpox. I cannot figure out when or why the flowers bloom; I've seen it happen just twice in the past five weeks in a pond in Ho Chi Minh City.
